"Holiday Cheer" Leads to Higher Drunk Driving Arrests and Fatalities
The period between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day has a higher rate of drunk driving arrest than any point during the rest of the year.

December 11, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) reveals that the period between Christmas and New Year's Day has a much higher percentage of drunk driving arrests and fatalities than the rest of the year. In fact, the NHTSA's data shows that the average daily rate of accidents involving drunk drivers rises a whopping 10 percent to an average of nearly 40 percent during the Christmas holiday and more than 41 percent during New Year's.

Nationwide campaigns like "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest." and "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" are committed to finding and punishing those driving under the influence (DUI) before they are involved in injury-causing or fatal accidents. Police know that with an abundance of "holiday cheer" being consumed at holiday parties and gatherings will come more people climbing behind the wheel who really shouldn't be there.

Consequences of a DUI Arrest

Every state in the nation -- as well as the District of Columbia -- now make it illegal to operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher. Consequences of a DUI arrest may vary slightly from state to state, but there are several common elements, including:
- License suspension or revocation (even for a first-time offense)
- Hefty fines
- Jail time or probation

Protecting Yourself

More police are on the roads during the Christmas and New Year's holiday seasons than any other time of the year because they realize that there will be more drunk drivers behind the wheel. If you plan to partake in alcohol this holiday season, your best bet is to have a designated driver. If you or a loved one is arrested for DUI, though, seek the advice of a skilled criminal defense attorney in your area as soon as possible to protect your rights and get started on your defense.
